Tall Cakes in Bracknell

Every cake here stands 5 inches whatever its width — that figure is on the menu itself. A tall cake is anything built above it, and height is the cheapest change you can make to how a cake reads in a room.

It is also the one dimension quoted in conversation rather than from a list, because the extra height is genuinely extra cake and an extra structure inside it.

The fixed uplifts this site used to publish were removed rather than carried forward: a flat figure was wrong at both ends of the range. Every fixed price is in one place, and two-tier cakes are the other way to buy height.

Why does height change a cake more than width?

Because a cake is seen from the side. A wider cake looks bigger only from above, which is the one angle nobody at a table has; a taller cake changes the silhouette against the room, and silhouette is what the eye registers from across a hall. It is why a modest tall cake photographs better than a broad one of the same volume.

It also changes what the decoration can do. A tall side is a surface — stripes, a gradient, piped work, a sash of flowers running top to bottom — where a standard side is a band. A great deal of what looks like an expensive designer cake is simply height giving the finish somewhere to happen.

What is a double-barrel cake?

Two cakes’ worth of height in what looks like one tier: the cake is built, a thin board set on top of the lower half, dowels pushed down to carry it, and the second half stacked above — then the whole thing is coated as a single surface so the join disappears. From the outside it is one cake; inside it is two with a floor between them.

That hidden floor is not optional above a certain height. Sponge and buttercream compress, and a tall column without support settles over a few hours — the sides bow and the top edge loses its line. Anyone offering a very tall cake without an internal structure is offering one that will be a different shape by the evening.

Should you buy height or a second tier?

If the room is small and the cake has to be seen, buy height — it is the cheaper purchase and it keeps one flavour. If you need to feed more people or give the room a choice of flavour, buy the second tier: two tiers at £270 feed 22–30 and let half the table have something else.

The single-tier page makes that comparison with prices, half-and-half cakes solve the flavour problem without a second tier, and the sizes guide explains the cut every portion figure here assumes.
