Novelty Cakes in Bracknell

A cake shaped like something, or decorated as something. There are two ways to get there and a large gap in price between them: the cake can be carved into the object, or the object can be modelled and set on a round cake.

The second is cheaper, travels better and often looks sharper. Shaping starts at £10 on top of the size price; a printed edible image is £20. Cakes from £100.

Shaping and finishes are charged on top of the size, which is the honest way round: the cake is the cheap part. The designs page prices every finish, and the prices page has the sizes.

Carved, or modelled on top?

This is the decision that sets the price, and most people make it without knowing they have. A carved cake is cut, stacked, filled, chilled and pared into the shape, then covered — the object is cake, and every hour of that is hours. A modelled cake is an ordinary round cake with the subject made separately in sugar or chocolate and placed on it, so the shape is a decoration and the cake underneath is a normal cake.

There are three practical differences besides the money. A carved cake feeds fewer people than the cake it came from, because the trimmings are waste. It is far more fragile in a car, since a carved shape has no flat sides to lean against. And a modelled figure can be lifted off and kept, which at a child's party is worth more than the cake was. The table below prices each route from the kitchen's own list.

How the shape is madeOn top of the cake
A printed edible image on a round cakeAny picture, printed on sugar paper and laid on the top£20 a sheet
A personalised acrylic topperNot edible, and it goes home with you£20–40
A moulded chocolate figurine on topThe object sits on the cake rather than being carved from it£15 each
The cake cut to a heartA real shape, charged on top of the size price£10–25
The cake cut to a number or letterOne digit; a second one is a second cake£15–25
Covered in fondant for a modelled finishWhat a carved or modelled cake is almost always covered in£30
Hand-painted on buttercreamThe dearest finish, and the one that cannot be rushed£45

Which sponge does a carved cake need?

A firm one. A soft open sponge sheds crumb along every cut face, rounds off its own corners within the hour and dents under the weight of a covering — which is why British bakers have reached for a close-crumbed plain sponge for shaped cakes for generations. What matters as much is the coat underneath the covering: a chilled shell of ganache or buttercream is what actually holds an edge sharp.

The guide to firm sponges explains the trade — a strong crumb eats plainer — and the fondant page covers the covering that nearly every modelled cake needs.

Which novelty cake do you actually want?

Most requests land in one of six places, and each has a page with its own prices and its own honest limits. A character or a theme for a child; an age cut from the cake; a name or initial; a club badge; a company logo; or a heart. If what you want is a photograph rather than a shape, that is an edible printed sheet at £20 and it goes on a perfectly ordinary cake.
