Number Cakes in Bracknell

A number on the cake — piped, modelled or cut flat — from £100 for a 6-inch cutting 8–12 slices. The number is included in the price rather than added to it.

One thing first, because the words cover two different cakes: this is a number on a cake. A number-shaped cake, cut from a sheet, is not something this kitchen makes — the cakes here are round, in four sizes.

Which way should the number be made?

Three ways, all included in the price of the cake, and they look quite different from across a room. Piped in buttercream is soft and handwritten; cut flat from fondant and laid on the top is crisp and reads from any angle; modelled and stood upright is the one people photograph, and the one that needs drying time before the cake can be finished. The table below is the short version.

HowLooks likeWorth knowing
PipedHandwritten, soft edgesBest on a buttercream cake

Why is a number such a reliable design?

Because it says what the cake is for before anybody explains, and it does it in one glance from the other side of a room. Themes have to be decoded — a cake covered in tools might be about a job, a hobby or a joke — but a number is read instantly by everybody present, including the people who arrived late. It is also the cheapest strong design there is: two colours and a well-made number beats four colours and three modelled objects, and costs less because the price follows the size rather than the decoration.

What if the number is two digits and the cake is small?

Then put it on the side, or spell it across cupcakes. Two modelled digits standing up need room on top, and a 6-inch cake does not have much — an 8-inch at £130 is the usual answer, or the number goes flat on the top where there is no competition for space. For a big birthday with a crowd, 12 cupcakes at £72 with a digit on each of the first two and the theme on the rest solves the problem and the cutting at the same time.
