Train Cakes in Bracknell

A train cake starts at £115: a 6-inch round at £100 with a modelled engine at £15 on top. An 8-inch with track piped around it is £145 and cuts 14–18 slices. Made to order in Bracknell and delivered across Berkshire.

The part worth deciding first is the carriages. 6 cupcakes in a row behind the engine cost £45, look like a train from across the room, and give every child their own cake — which is the real problem at a third birthday, not the design.

One engine, or an engine and a row of carriages?

A single engine on a round cake is the cheaper order and it photographs perfectly well, but it is a cake with a train on it. An engine followed by 6 cupcake carriages is a train, because length is what makes a train read as one: six objects in a line on a table do what no amount of modelling on one cake can. The second version also costs £45 more and saves an adult ten minutes with a knife, which at a party for three-year-olds is the better of the two savings.

Three ways to build the train

£115 — engine on a 6-inch, 8–12 slices.

£160 — the same cake plus 6 cupcake carriages: one cake each for six children.

£215 — an 8-inch with track plus 12 carriages, for a party of twelve.

What should be in the carriages?

Something, and that is the trick most train cakes miss. A cupcake carriage with a flat top is a wagon; the same cupcake with three sweets, a few berries or a little pile of chocolate buttons on top is a loaded coal truck, and children notice the difference immediately. Berries are the version parents prefer and they cost nothing extra on a summer order — berry cakes covers what is in season. Sprinkles are free from the add-ons list, so a carriage full of them costs the price of the cupcake.

What about a number instead of an engine?

A train with the child's age as the engine number is the detail that makes this cake theirs rather than generic, and it costs nothing: a 3 piped or cut onto the side of the engine is writing, not a figure. The other version is the age in fondant on the cake with the train running around it — a number cake with a train on top. For the other vehicles, car cakes and novelty cakes carry the same two choices.
