Teddy Bear Cakes in Bracknell
A bear modelled in sugar, sitting on a soft buttercream cake with daisies around the side. From £100 for a 6-inch feeding 8–12, or £70 for a 4" bento.
It is a first-birthday cake under another name, and the reason it works is that it does not shout. The palette is quiet so the bear reads as a toy.

Why does the quiet version work better?
Because the bear is the only thing on the cake that has a face, and a face wants a background rather than competition. A dusty pink, caramel or oatmeal buttercream with a few small daisies gives the bear somewhere to sit; the same bear on a cake in four bright colours with bunting, balloons and a name across the front disappears into the noise.
There is a practical reason as well. First-birthday cakes are photographed more than any other cake made here — it is the picture that goes in the album and on the wall — and soft colours photograph well under the indoor light every first birthday actually happens in. Bright colours under a kitchen ceiling light go harsh.
Bear, topper or both?
A modelled sugar bear is made by hand and dried before it goes near the cake, so it is quoted with the design and ordered earlier than a plain cake. It is also the version that looks like nothing else — it will be slightly different every time, which is the charm of it. An acrylic topper at £20–£40 is cheaper, arrives sharp, and is built to be kept.
Both is not excessive at a first birthday: the bear on the cake and the name on a topper that goes into a memory box afterwards. What rarely works is a plastic toy bear stood on the icing — it reads as a toy that has been put on a cake, because that is what it is.
What else is ordered with one?
A smash cake, nearly always — a small, plain, sturdy cake the child is allowed to destroy while somebody photographs it, served alongside the cake the adults eat. The 4" bento at £70 is the usual choice because it is the right size for a one-year-old and nothing on it can be choked on.
Smash cakes covers that properly, first birthdays the whole occasion, baby showers the other event this theme suits, and character cakes the rest of the themes.
