First Birthday & Smash Cakes in Bracknell
Two cakes, usually: a 4" smash cake at £70 for the child to put their hands through, and something bigger for the people watching — from £100 for 8–12 slices. Together, £170.
One thing first, because it matters more than the design: the honey cake this kitchen is known for is not suitable for a child under twelve months. The NHS advises against honey before then, and a first birthday is right on that line.

Why not honey for a baby?
Because honey can carry spores that a baby’s gut cannot yet deal with, and the illness that follows — infant botulism — is rare and serious. The NHS puts it plainly: no honey before twelve months. A first birthday is the day the twelve months are up, so the child is technically past it — but the siblings and the smaller cousins at the table are not, and a cake is cut for everyone. Vanilla and chocolate sponges have no honey in them, and they are what this kitchen suggests for the under-twos.
Which of our cakes contain honey
The classic honey cake and the honey cake with prunes and walnuts — honey is the whole point of both.
Everything else on the menu is a sponge or a meringue cake. Ask in the enquiry and you will get the ingredient list for the one you are ordering.
How big should the grown-ups’ cake be?
A first birthday is usually grandparents, a few friends and their children — ten to twenty people, of whom half are too small to finish a slice. A 6-inch cuts 8–12 and an 8-inch 14–18, so the six-inch covers most first birthdays and the eight covers the ones with the whole street in the garden. The 5-inch at £90 exists for the parties that are four adults and a baby.
What happens to a smash cake afterwards?
Nothing good, which is the point. Buttercream photographs better than fondant when it is being destroyed — it gives rather than cracks — and it ends up on hands rather than in sharp pieces. A bento needs only 3–5 days’ notice, so if you decide late that you want one, it is the half of the order that can still be added.
