Vegan & Gluten-Free Cupcakes: We Do Not Make Them

There are no vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free or nut-free cupcakes here. Every cupcake is made with wheat, egg and dairy, at £6 each in boxes of 6, 12, 24.

The one free-from thing this kitchen makes is a 8-inch cake set on a set mousse made from cashews — £120, no egg, no dairy, and cashews throughout. It is a cake, not a cupcake, and the difference is explained below rather than apologised for.

Why is a free-from cupcake harder than a free-from cake?

Because a cupcake is a tray. One flavour of cupcake is one batch of batter baked in one tin, which is why the minimum here is 6 of a flavour — half a dozen is the smallest amount that can be made without throwing most of a batch away. A free-from version is not a variation on that batch; it is a second batch with its own flour, its own binding, its own tins and its own cleaned-down surfaces.

A cake absorbs that cost better. One eight-inch vegan cake is one object, made as its own thing, and it feeds a table — which is why the free-from product that exists here is a cake and the one that does not is a cupcake. The table below is the honest version of what each request runs into.

What should you do instead?

If it is one guest at a party, buy their cake separately from somewhere that specialises. A dedicated free-from bakery with its own kitchen can do in an afternoon what a mixed kitchen cannot do safely at all, and a box of their cupcakes beside our cake is a better party than a compromise from either of us. We would rather say that than take the order.

If the whole party is free-from, we are the wrong bakery and the honest version of that is a single sentence rather than a quotation. And if it is a diagnosed allergy rather than a diet, read the allergens page first: Our kitchen handles all major allergens (celery, gluten, crustaceans, eggs, fish, lupin, milk, molluscs, mustard, peanuts, sesame, soybeans, sulphur dioxide and sulphites, tree nuts). While we take every care, products may contain traces of allergens.

Which free-from questions does this kitchen answer yes to?

One, properly: a cake with no animal product in it at all. That covers a vegan diet and a vegetarian household avoiding egg, in 3 flavours, at one size and one price. It contains cashews, so it is no use to anybody avoiding nuts, and it is made in a kitchen that handles all fourteen named allergens.

The four free-from pages each give their own answer rather than a general one: gluten-free, dairy-free, nut-free and sugar-free.

What else do people ask?

Allergies? Our kitchen handles all 14 of the allergens UK law requires us to declare, so nothing we bake is free from any of them. What is in each cake, and our hygiene rating.
