Nut-Free Cakes: Why We Say No

We cannot make a cake that is safe for a nut allergy, and this is the page that says so rather than the reply to an enquiry three weeks from now. Peanuts and tree nuts are used in this kitchen, the dairy-free cake is made of cashews, and nothing leaving here can be promised free of traces.

A cake with no nuts in its own recipe is a different matter and perfectly possible. If the person you are buying for has a diagnosed allergy rather than a preference, that distinction is the one that matters, and the rest of this page is about it.

Where exactly are the nuts in this kitchen?

In the recipes, in the fillings and in the one cake that is made entirely of them. Of the 10 flavours whose allergens are listed, 3 contain nuts outright; the dairy-free cake is set on a set mousse made from cashews; and several of the signature menu cakes carry walnuts or almonds. The table below is the short list, and the full per-cake allergen list is published rather than kept for the enquiry.

Why is this answer stricter than the others?

Because of what happens when it is wrong. An intolerance misjudged means somebody feels unwell; a nut allergy misjudged means an ambulance. The Food Standards Agency puts nuts and peanuts among the fourteen allergens a food business must declare precisely because the reactions are severe and fast. So on this one we are not weighing probability against an order — the answer is no, and it does not become a yes for a cake that matters a lot to somebody.

Two questions worth asking any bakery

Is there a separate space and separate equipment for nut-free work?

What else was made in that space on the same day?

An answer about cleaning rather than separation is an intention, not a control.

What can we do for you instead?

Three things, all of them honest. Bake a cake with no nuts in its recipe, for a household avoiding nuts by choice. Tell you exactly what is in any cake, in writing, so that whoever is managing the allergy can decide with facts rather than reassurance. And say no early enough for you to order elsewhere — which is the most useful of the three, and the reason this page exists rather than a sentence buried in an allergens list. Lead time here is 7–10 days, so the sooner that no arrives, the better your other options look.

What else do people ask?

Allergies? Our kitchen handles all 14 of the allergens UK law requires us to declare, so nothing we bake is free from any of them. What is in each cake, and our hygiene rating.
