How many cupcakes for how many guests?
One each plus a tenth, rounded up to a multiple of 6 because every flavour is baked as its own batch. The table below does the arithmetic with the boxes that are actually sold rather than a per-cake price no box carries, so the totals are what you would pay.
| Guests | Cupcakes | Total | Each |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30 | 36 | £210 | £5.83 |
| 50 | 60 | £348 | £5.80 |
| 80 | 90 | £522 | £5.80 |
| 120 | 132 | £762 | £5.77 |
Children count as half a guest in practice, and evening-only guests as one each — they arrive hungry.
Cupcakes or a tiered cake?
Cupcakes solve serving, a tiered cake solves the photograph. Nobody has to cut, plate or hand round a cupcake, which is an hour of somebody’s afternoon saved and the reason caterers like them; but a cupcake tower is not what a photographer frames the couple against. For 80 guests, 90 cupcakes are £522 against £270 for a two-tier cutting 22–30 portions — so the usual answer is both, with a 6-inch at £100 standing in for the tiers.
What each one gives you
Cupcakes — no cutting, no plates, several flavours, everyone served at once.
Tiered cake — the photograph, one flavour per tier, somebody has to cut it.
Both — a 6-inch to cut at £100 and cupcakes for the room.
How do they travel and keep on the day?
Boxed, flat, and best out of the fridge for an hour before anybody eats one — buttercream straight from cold eats like cold butter. A marquee in July is the hard case: buttercream softens before the guests do, so cupcakes are better kept in the coolest room the venue has and brought out when the tables are dressed rather than at breakfast. Delivery from £30 is quoted by distance, and for a wedding it is worth taking: the morning is busy enough without a boot full of open boxes.
