Piñata Cakes in Bracknell

A piñata cake has a hollow cut into its middle layer and filled with about 150–200g of sweets, closed over by the layer above, so the first slice sends them pouring out. A 6-inch is £100 and an 8-inch £130, made to order in Bracknell and delivered across Berkshire.

One number matters more than the design: the hollow costs you cake. An 8-inch piñata feeds about 11–14 where the solid cake feeds 14–18. Order one size up from what the guest list says.

How does the cake hold together with a hole in it?

By turning the hollow layer into a ring. The middle layer has its centre cut out with a cutter, leaving a wall of sponge an inch or more thick all the way round, and that ring carries the weight of the layer above it exactly as a solid layer would — a cake is strong at its edges, not its middle. The top layer goes on whole, which is what keeps the surprise hidden. The one thing this structure cannot take is a second tier, so a piñata cake is a single-tier cake by definition.

What the hollow costs in slices

6-inch — 8–12 solid, about 6–9 as a piñata.

8-inch — 14–18 solid, about 11–14 as a piñata.

Every size is in the price guide; take roughly a fifth off for the hollow.

What age is a piñata cake for?

Five to eleven, and it is wasted outside that. Below about five the spill is startling rather than exciting and the sweets are a choking question; above eleven the reveal reads as a cake for younger children, although a piñata inside a plain grown-up cake is a reliable joke at a thirtieth. In the middle of that range it is the single most effective cake on this site for the money, because nothing else turns the cutting of the cake into the part of the party the children talk about. The birthday cakes page has the rest of the ages.

What else turns a cake into an event?

Three things this kitchen makes, and each puts the surprise in a different place. A piñata hides it inside the cake. A smash cake is the one a one-year-old is allowed to destroy, so the cake itself is the activity. A half-and-half cake hides nothing but settles an argument about flavour, which at a joint party matters more than any reveal. All three cost what the plain cake of that size costs — for a party of children the choice is about what you want the cutting to do, not about the budget.
