Cakes for a Funeral Tea

A cake for a funeral tea is a plain cake in a large size. A 10-inch is £150 and cuts 22–28 slices; an 8-inch is £130 and cuts 14–18; 24 cupcakes are £140 and need no knife at all. Made to order in Bracknell and delivered across Berkshire.

Two practical things, said plainly. Most funerals are arranged in less than a week, which puts this order inside the rush window of 7 days at +50% — and a plain cake can be made faster than a decorated one. Say the date and you will get a straight answer by return.

Why is a plain cake the right cake here?

Because of where it sits. A funeral tea puts the cake on a side table with sandwiches and a tea urn, and the people eating it are talking to each other rather than looking at it. A cake that asks to be noticed in that room is doing the wrong job: it becomes something guests feel they have to comment on. A smooth single colour in ivory, white or soft grey disappears correctly, and it costs nothing extra — a plain buttercream finish is the one on the designs list that adds nothing to the price, so the restraint is free as well as right.

What gets ordered for a wake

A 10-inch plain cake, £150 — 22–28 slices, no writing.

24 cupcakes, £140 — nobody has to cut or serve anything.

Their flavour, finished plainly — any of the ten flavours or the signature cakes.

A photograph on icing, if the family wants a centrepiece — photo cakes.

What is possible when there are only a few days?

More than people assume, and it depends entirely on the decoration rather than on the cake. The baking is a morning; what takes 7–10 days is a decorated cake moving through a queue of other decorated cakes. A plain cake, or a box of cupcakes, can usually be fitted in at short notice where a themed one cannot — and inside 7 days the rate is +50%, which is quoted up front with everything else. The last-minute cakes page sets out what can and cannot be brought forward, and bento cakes need only 3–5 days if the gathering is a small one.

Who usually places this order?

Not the immediate family. Nearly every one of these comes from a sibling, a cousin, a neighbour or a colleague who has taken the catering off somebody else’s list, and that changes two practical things. The flavour is often a guess — which is fine, and a plain vanilla or chocolate sponge is never wrong. And the delivery address is frequently a venue rather than a house, so the useful thing to include in the enquiry is the name of the person who will be there to take it. Collection in Bracknell is free and the day before is better than the morning; delivery is priced by distance and cake care covers keeping it overnight.
