Why is this the easiest cake of the year to get wrong?

Because the shops have decided what it looks like — a tie, a moustache, a cartoon tool kit — and almost nobody’s father is that man. The cakes that land are specific: the team he has watched lose for forty years, the car he keeps threatening to restore, the dog, the allotment, the joke the family has told since before the children could speak. One subject, said plainly, in two colours. If you cannot think of the subject, the writing is the subject: a short line only your family understands beats a modelled tie by a distance.

Three that work

The thing he does every weekend, modelled on top.

His club’s two colours and nothing else — football cakes covers the badge question.

Dark ganache and one line of writing. It photographs better than any of it.

How does a Sunday work here?

Collection is 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM — a window rather than a day, because this is a home kitchen with a family in it. That covers a cake collected on the way to lunch, which is what most people do. If those slots fill, Saturday 19 June works just as well: the cake keeps two days in a fridge and Saturday to Sunday is well inside that. Monday is closed, which matters only if the lunch has been moved.

The other Sunday occasion is Mothering Sunday, and every date worth ordering ahead for is on cakes by occasion.

Is a cake even the right present?

As a present on its own, often not — it is eaten by everybody including the people who bought it, which is the opposite of a present. As the thing that turns a Sunday lunch into an occasion, it is hard to beat, and that is the honest case for it: the cake is for the afternoon rather than for him. Which is also why the 4" bento at £70 is the most ordered version of this: small enough that nobody pretends it is a gift, good enough that it is finished before anybody leaves.
