What makes a Halloween cake look right?
Two colours and one idea. Black with orange, or black with deep green, reads as Halloween from across a room before a single modelled spider is involved — which is why the cheapest version of this cake is also usually the best-looking one. Black is on 14 of the 70 photographs in this gallery, and it is the colour that does the work: it makes any second colour look brighter than it is. What spoils it is crowding: four colours, three characters and a cobweb on every face turn into visual noise under a kitchen light. Pick the one thing the cake is about — a pumpkin, a hand, a single word — and let the colour do the rest.
What is included, and what is quoted
Included: the colours, a piped design, writing, a simple theme.
Quoted: modelled figures, hand-painting, a printed topper.
Not done: an exact likeness of a film character — its colours and shapes instead.
Is it a party or a half-term birthday?
The last week of October carries both, and they want different things. A Halloween party wants 12 cupcakes at £72: handed round in a dark room, eaten in costume, no plates. A birthday that happens to land in that week wants a cake with candles — and the useful trick is to let the birthday be the birthday, with Halloween in the colours rather than in the theme, so the photograph is of a child’s birthday and not of a pumpkin.
For the birthday itself see birthday cakes, and for every other date worth ordering ahead for, cakes by occasion.
Why order this one early?
Because Halloween is the only evening in the year when every order wants the same slot. A birthday moves — a party on the Saturday instead of the Thursday is nobody’s tragedy — but the thirty-first does not, so the diary fills from both ends of that week at once. Ask by Thursday 21 October and it is an ordinary order; after that it is a rush at 50% more, if there is room at all.
