Chocolate-Covered Strawberries in Bracknell
Strawberries dipped in dark, milk or white chocolate, drizzled and finished, boxed and ribboned. Made the day you collect them, because that is the only day they are at their best.
Priced per box rather than from a list — the fruit is the cost and the fruit changes with the season. Ask and the answer comes back the same day. Delivery across Berkshire from £30.

Why do these have to be made on the day?
Because a strawberry does not stop being fruit when you put chocolate on it. It keeps respiring and losing moisture, and that moisture has nowhere to go: it collects between the berry and the shell. Within a day the chocolate loosens from the fruit, and within two the box has juice in the bottom of it. Nothing can be done about this — it is the fruit, not the chocolate.
So the practical rule is to order them for the day they will be eaten and to resist getting ahead. That makes them the opposite of almost everything else here: a cake improves on its second day once the layers have settled, and these are at their peak about an hour after they are dipped.
What makes one box better than another?
The fruit, by a long way. Chocolate is chocolate and the dipping is five minutes of work — what separates a good box from a disappointing one is whether the berries were ripe, dry and the same size, and whether they were dipped at room temperature rather than straight from a cold fridge. A cold berry sweats under its shell before it has even been boxed.
The second thing is restraint. Three chocolates, a drizzle and a scattering is a box that looks expensive; the same berries under four colours of sprinkle, crushed biscuit and a gold leaf look like they are hiding something. Sprinkles are included at no charge — silver, gold, white, multi colours.
When are strawberries actually worth buying?
British strawberries run from roughly May to September, and in those months the fruit is sweet, scented and soft. Outside them the berries come from Spain, Morocco or Egypt and are firmer, paler inside and less fragrant — which, oddly, makes them easier to dip and better at holding a clean shell. Neither is wrong; they are different products and it is worth knowing which one you are ordering.
These sit beside the other things that are boxed rather than cut — gift boxes and hampers has the rest, and Valentine’s is the week they are ordered most. For a gift that keeps longer than a day, a four-inch bento is the better answer.
