Birthday Cakes for Her

From £100 for a 6-inch cutting 8–12 slices, made to order in Bracknell: textured buttercream, fresh fruit, one colour chosen properly rather than three chosen quickly.

And if a cake with candles is the last thing she wants, the 4" bento at £70 serves about 4 and carries one line of writing — which is frequently the better present.

Is the cake to be eaten or admired?

It is the only question on this page that changes the cake, and most people never ask it. A cake to be eaten wants a sharp filling, a thin layer of buttercream and no fondant — it is cut early, and the second slice is the compliment. A cake to be admired wants the texture, the fruit and the colour, because it will stand on a table for an hour first and be photographed before anybody touches it. They cost the same. They are not the same cake, and a baker told which one you want will make a better job of it.

Two ways to brief the same cake

To be eaten: “Vanilla & Strawberry, thin on the buttercream, no fondant.”

To be admired: “Textured buttercream, one colour, fresh berries, nothing written on it.”

Both: a 6-inch at £100, cut after the photographs.

What does the gallery actually show?

Rather than guess what she will like, here is what is really ordered. Of the 70 photographs usable on a page like this, 65 use a pale palette and 20 include pink; 23 are finished in textured buttercream, which is the stripe-and-swirl finish left by a palette knife rather than a smooth coat. That texture is the single most-ordered look on this site and it costs nothing extra — it is a way of applying buttercream, not an upgrade.

Do flowers go on the cake or beside it?

Fruit goes on; flowers mostly go on top and come off before cutting. Fresh berries are food and sit directly on the buttercream, which is why they are the decoration used most often here. Fresh flowers are not all food-safe — some are toxic and most have been treated — so they are laid on a cake rather than pushed into it, and lifted off before the first slice. Sugar flowers are the third option: entirely edible, made by hand, and quoted with the design because each one takes the time it takes.
