What is Spartak, and how does it taste?

Spartak is a chocolate version of the Eastern European layered honey cake, known as medovik. It is made from thin chocolate honey layers, each one generously soaked in pastry cream, so the cream runs through the whole cake.

The pastry cream can be vanilla or chocolate, and both give a velvety filling. The texture is soft and melts easily as you eat it. Because the layers are thin, every slice holds layers of cake and cream together rather than one thick band of either.

Spartak comes in six-inch, eight-inch and ten-inch sizes. All three sizes are the same height, 5 inches, so the cake keeps the same proportions whichever size you choose.

If you are deciding between flavours, think about whether you want the cream to lead with vanilla or with chocolate. Both versions keep the same honey layers, so the choice is about the filling.

How does Spartak differ from our other honey cakes?

Spartak differs from our other honey cakes in being chocolate, where the Classic Honey Cake uses honey layers soaked in vanilla pastry cream.

Unlike the Classic Honey Cake, Spartak can be soaked in either vanilla or chocolate pastry cream, so the flavour can lean towards chocolate or stay with vanilla. Whereas the Honey Cake with Prunes & Nuts has caramel cream, prunes and walnuts, Spartak is made from chocolate honey layers and pastry cream, rather than caramel cream, prunes and walnuts.

Where the Classic Honey Cake is built around vanilla, Spartak is built around chocolate. The honey layers are the same starting point for both, but the chocolate changes how the cake tastes.

If you want a honey cake with chocolate, Spartak is the one to choose. If you want the honey layers with vanilla cream alone, the Classic is the cake for you. The Prunes & Nuts cake suits customers who want caramel and nut flavours instead.

How do I order a Spartak cake?

To order Spartak, send the enquiry form on this page with the size, the date and any writing, and usual notice is 7–10 days, or at least 14 for two tiers.

Our price comes back within a day of your enquiry. Spartak is available in six-inch, eight-inch and ten-inch sizes, and the size you choose sets the price, so include the size in your form.

Pick the size that suits your occasion. All sizes are the same height, 5 inches, so the size is the only thing that changes between the options.

Include any writing you want on the cake in the form, along with the date you need it. Collection from our Bracknell studio is free, or we can deliver from £30.

When you choose your date, allow for the usual notice of 7–10 days, or at least 14 for two tiers, so the cake is ready when you need it.
