What is Red Velvet Cake and how does it taste?
Red Velvet Cake is a dessert of delicate red velvet layers with a hint of chocolate, which alternate with smooth vanilla cream cheese. The layers and the cream cheese are both part of every slice, so each mouthful gives you the red velvet and the vanilla together.
The chocolate is a hint rather than the main flavour, so the vanilla cream cheese stands out against the red layers. In our photograph the sides are coated in red velvet crumbs, and the top has a border of white piped cream with fresh strawberries on it.
The cake comes in six-inch, eight-inch and ten-inch sizes. All three are the same height, 5 inches, so each size looks the same from the side and only the diameter changes.
How is Red Velvet Cake different from our other cakes?
Red Velvet Cake differs from our Double Chocolate Cake in most of its layers. Unlike the Double Chocolate Cake, which is rich chocolate sponge soaked in vanilla milk with Belgian dark chocolate cream, the red velvet has only a hint of chocolate and is filled with vanilla cream cheese.
The Victoria Sponge Cake is a different kind of cake again. Whereas the Victoria Sponge has light, fluffy layers with homemade jam and cream, our Red Velvet Cake uses cream cheese rather than jam, and its layers are delicate rather than light and fluffy.
Choose Red Velvet Cake if you want a cream cheese flavour under a chocolate hint, with the crumb-coated sides shown in our photograph. Choose the Double Chocolate Cake if you want chocolate as the main flavour, and the Victoria Sponge if you want jam and cream.
