What is the Rafaello Cake and how does it taste?
The Rafaello Cake is an almond sponge with coconut cream, finished with crunchy almond-wafer pieces on top. Those pieces sit atop the sponge, so each slice has a crisp layer above the soft cake beneath.
The two main flavours are almond and coconut. The almond sponge gives the base flavour, the coconut cream comes alongside it, and the wafer adds the crunch. Taken together, the cake moves from crisp on top to soft and creamy below, and that contrast is the point of it.
We make it in six-inch, eight-inch and ten-inch sizes, and every size is the same height, 5 inches. Every size matches the others in height, so the three sizes are built to match.
How does the Rafaello Cake differ from our Snickers and Victoria Sponge cakes?
The Rafaello Cake is an almond cake, unlike the Snickers Cake, which is built on chocolate. The Snickers Cake has chocolate sponge, homemade salt caramel, roasted peanuts, light peanut nougat and Belgian chocolate cream, whereas the Rafaello has almond sponge, coconut cream and crunchy almond-wafer pieces.
Set against the Victoria Sponge Cake, the Rafaello takes a different route. The Victoria Sponge is a true British classic, with light, fluffy layers and a sweet homemade jam and cream filling, rather than coconut cream and wafer. Where the Victoria Sponge is built around jam, the Rafaello is built around almond and coconut, with the wafer on top.
If you want chocolate and peanut, choose the Snickers Cake. If you want almond and coconut with a crunchy top, the Rafaello is the one to pick. The Victoria Sponge is the choice if you want a jam and cream filling.
