What is Napoleon Cake and what does it taste like?
Napoleon Cake is an Eastern European layered cake of puff pastry and cream, a relative of the French mille-feuille. It is made from flaky puff pastry layers with a creamy Diplomat filling, so the flaky layers and the creamy filling are the two parts you will notice first.
Our six-inch, eight-inch and ten-inch cakes are all the same height, 5 inches, so the sizes differ in width rather than in depth. The sides are coated in flaky pastry crumbs, so the outside of the cake carries the same texture as the layers within.
On top, our photographs show whipped cream rosettes with fresh berries, or a chocolate top with berries. A birthday topper and a satin ribbon also appear in our photographs, so the cake can be finished in more than one way.
How is Napoleon Cake different from Honey Cake and Spartak?
Unlike the Classic Honey Cake and Spartak, the Napoleon is built from puff pastry rather than honey layers. The Classic Honey Cake, or medovik, has thin honey layers soaked in vanilla pastry cream. Spartak has chocolate honey layers, filled with either vanilla or chocolate pastry cream.
The main difference is the layer itself. The Napoleon's layers are puff pastry, whereas the Classic Honey Cake and Spartak both use honey layers, and only Spartak adds chocolate to them. Where the Napoleon has a creamy Diplomat filling between its flaky layers, the honey cakes are filled with pastry cream.
If you want a chocolate cake built from honey layers, Spartak is the one on our menu to choose. The Napoleon can also carry a chocolate top with berries, as our photographs show, but its layers remain puff pastry rather than chocolate. Choose by the layer you want, and the decoration will follow from that.
How do I order a Napoleon Cake?
Send the enquiry form on this page with the size, the date and any writing you would like on the cake. The price comes back within a day, and our usual notice is 7–10 days, or at least 14 for two tiers.
Choose from the six-inch, eight-inch or ten-inch sizes. These cost £100, £130 and £150 respectively, and all three are the same height, 5 inches, so the choice of size is a choice of width.
Collection is free from our Bracknell studio, or we can deliver from £30. Because the cake is made to order, give us the date you need it when you send the form, so we can plan the work against it.
If you want writing on the cake, put the exact wording on the form so it is included with your order. Any changes to the wording should be sent to us in the same way, through the enquiry form on this page.
