What is a Black Forest cake and how does it taste?

Black Forest is a chocolate sponge layered with creamy frosting and tangy cherries. The sponge is rich and chocolatey, and the frosting is creamy, so the two form the main body of the cake. The cherries add a sharp, fruity note, and that note keeps the cake from tasting heavy, because the richness of the chocolate is balanced by the freshness of the fruit.

Every slice gives you chocolate, cream and cherry together. Our photographs show the finished cake. The same cake is made in three sizes, six-inch, eight-inch and ten-inch, and each one is 5 inches high, so the proportions stay the same whichever size you pick.

If you want a chocolate cake with a fresh, fruity edge, this is the one we make with cherries. The cherries are the difference from a straight chocolate sponge, so they are the part to look for when you choose.

How does Black Forest differ from our other chocolate and fruit cakes?

Black Forest differs from Double Chocolate Cake and Orange & Sour Cherry Cake: unlike the first, it uses cherries, and unlike the second, its sponge is chocolate. Both of the other cakes sit on our menu next to it, so the choice comes down to what you want from each slice.

Double Chocolate Cake is a rich chocolate sponge soaked in vanilla milk, with an indulgent Belgian dark chocolate cream. Where the Double Chocolate Cake has that Belgian dark chocolate cream, the Black Forest has creamy frosting and tangy cherries. Rather than relying on the soaking milk, the Black Forest gets its character from the fruit.

Orange & Sour Cherry Cake is a juicy orange sponge with a tangy cherry mousse and cherry filling, layered with smooth vanilla cream and silky orange cremeux. Whereas the Black Forest is built on chocolate, this cake leads with orange. Both share a tangy cherry note, but the Orange & Sour Cherry Cake puts its cherry into a mousse and filling, where ours is layered through the cake.

How do I order a Black Forest cake?

Send the enquiry form on this page with the size, the date and any writing, and the price comes back within a day. Our usual notice is 7–10 days, or at least 14 for two tiers, so send the date as early as you can.

  • Choose the size: six-inch at £100, eight-inch at £130 or ten-inch at £150.
  • Give the date you need the cake for, counting back from the usual notice of 7–10 days, or at least 14 for two tiers.
  • Add any writing you want on the cake to the form.
  • Wait for the price, which comes back within a day.

All three sizes are 5 inches high, so the sizes differ in diameter rather than depth. Every order starts with the enquiry form on this page, and the size, date and writing are what we need from you to begin.
